Important things to think about before choosing and installing a stove.
All stoves require minimum clearances to combustible materials. These distances vary between manufacturers and models. Our team will advise you on the correct distances for the stove you choose, ensuring safe installation and compliance with building regulations.
Your chimney should be in good condition and have been swept within the last 12 months. If you have a lined chimney, check that the liner is in good condition. If unlined, a new liner will likely be needed. Our HETAS-registered installers can advise on chimney requirements.
Modern houses are well-sealed, so your stove may need an external air supply. This is a building regulation requirement for stoves over 5kW. Many modern stoves have a direct air kit available, which draws air from outside rather than from the room.
If you choose a wood burning stove, always use properly seasoned or kiln-dried wood with a moisture content below 20%. Burning wet wood creates excessive smoke, tar deposits in your chimney, and dramatically reduces efficiency. We can advise on local wood suppliers.
A correctly sized stove is crucial. Too large and you’ll overheat the room; too small and it won’t be effective. Modern stoves achieve 60–80% efficiency compared to just 5–20% for an open fire. Bring your room dimensions and we’ll calculate the ideal output (kW) for your space.
Stove installations must comply with Building Regulations Approved Document J (England & Wales).
This covers hearth sizes, flue requirements, ventilation, and distances to combustibles.
A HETAS-registered installer will handle Building Regulations notification on your behalf.
